Yesterday we finally got around to putting the last screw in our couch. That's right all you people who sat on it at the baby shower last month - you had no idea that at any second the arm rest could fall off. Ha. Terry pulled out his big case of wrenches and my boys came running/army crawling to get in on the action.
And I was reminded again that I am a minority in my own home. I am outnumbered 3:1 but I LOVE it. Sure, boys do things sometimes that I just. don't. get. Terry included. Boys are kind of weird but then I am reminded of something I read in this book that "boys bear a unique image of a wild, playful and imaginative Creator" and I smile. Wild, playful and imaginative is exactly how I would describe my guys. Who else would wish to have a mustache at the age of 2? Who else could turn anything into a construction crane? (Literally everything - strings, straws, my shoe - he's done it all.)
Who else gets super excited to play with a case full of wrenches? I definitely don't but they do!
I was talking to a friend recently who said she was convinced that our Father in Heaven is a total boy-at-heart and wondered if He made volcanos and thunderstorms for no other reason than to blow stuff up and make loud noises. I'm not trying to be irreverent but it's thoughts like these that remind me of the limitless potential of the two boys that He has given me. I know without a doubt that I was meant to be their Mother and they were meant to be my sons.
And while motherhood is the hardest job I have ever had (...way harder than a class full of teenagers...) it is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I obviously look forward to the day that I can have a genuine conversation with my guys but right now is incredible too. I get to talk about construction vehicles, bugs and the complexity of flavor in a cheese stick all day. What's not to love about that?? And I know on the day that genuine conversation happens I will wish for the days when I could hold both of them on my lap to read a book. Why is it that time has to speed up now?? (Although I can honestly say I will never miss changing diapers. Diapers are the worst.)
So I'm going to take lots of pictures, give them lots of kisses and pray that I will always be able to remember how soft their skin is, how they smell after a bath, and how it feels to hold a snuggly baby. Then I'm going to work my hardest every day to ensure that I do my part in helping them become the kind of men that Heavenly Father wants them to be. I have an incredible husband who is my better half, I was raised by a Mother who taught me to work and to love, and I have a Savior who makes up for all of my weaknesses. With all of that help and support there's no way I can fail at this sacred calling of motherhood.
It is a sacred experience to watch these boys explore the world and help them to make sense of it.
Raising these boys with Terry is an incredible daily gift.

Sweet! Lucky boys to have a mama like you.
You have such a way with words. I love what you said and cried through most of it. What an awesome mom you are, and such an example to those of us who are lucky enough to spend time with you and your wonderful boys.
